If you're playing, booking, or just trying to keep up with the underground scene across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland, there's a real good chance Grinding With Strangers is already on your radar. And if it's not — fix that immediately.
The Grinding With Strangers Facebook group is one of those rare community hubs that actually does what it says: it connects the scene. Show announcements, band spotlights, venue shoutouts, gear talk, local drama, and the occasional chaos you'd expect from people who live for loud — it's all there. No algorithm gatekeeping it, no brand deal softening the edges. Just the underground doing its thing in public.
The People Holding It Down
A lot of groups like this exist for about three weeks before they go quiet. Grinding With Strangers keeps moving because of the people driving it. Dave Rinker and Metal Donnie deserve a direct callout here: these two have put in serious time supporting the scene across multiple states, showing up, spreading the word, and making sure bands and fans actually find each other. That kind of sustained energy is rare and it matters.
On the promoter side, Kellan "Killdozer" Miller, Shane "Junk Punk" Huckle, and the folks at Raptor Rise Collective are doing the unglamorous work of actually putting shows together — booking venues, coordinating lineups, and making sure there's somewhere to play in the first place. Every scene runs on people like this, and the mid-Atlantic region is lucky to have them in the mix.
The Bands You Need to Know
This corner of the scene is stacked, and this list is completely incomplete! If I missed you, don't worry because I'll be publishing record reviews, show reviews, venue reviews, and band reviews in the near future. Here's a small, and I mean TINY small slice of what's moving through the Grinding With Strangers world:
- Ghost Riot — if you haven't caught them live yet, that's a personal problem you should solve soon.
- The Doo Wutz — equal parts weird and loud, which is exactly the right formula.
- Dead End Lane — the name does the work. Heavy and direct.
- Wayward Brigade — solid live act, loud and snotty pogo punk that brings me back to the dumpster fire shows that were so fun back in the day. I don't remember a lot of them, and seeing Wayward helps jog the memory!
- Heroes Unsung — full disclosure: I play in this band. Old school hardcore/punk rock 'n' roll.
- El Radness — the name says everything and somehow still undersells it. This band is... RAD!
- FYA — John Atom and Co. just punch you in the face everytime. It's a good thing.
- Red Die Number Nine — Baltimore legends who've been chugging away since the '80s'. Their 1989 "Baltimore" 7" on Justified Vandalism Records is still a fixture on my turntable.
- Junk Punk — everyone knows Junk Punk. He likes fishing and is one of the hardest working artists out there, period.
- Kenny Ballztank — Speaking of The Doo Wutz, I don't know how one human is in this many bands simultaneously but he's a real fixture in Grinding With Strangers. Somehow playing in what seems like a different project every two weeks and they all rip.

The Rooms Worth Knowing
The Grinding With Strangers network runs through some genuinely solid venues. Pappy's Pub in Waynesboro, PA is the kind of local bar that actually supports live music and doesn't treat the bands like an inconvenience. Bad Habits in Martinsburg, WV earns its name in the best way — if you've been there for a show, you know. And the Frederick Eagles Club in Frederick, MD has been putting on underground gigs long enough through a large number of bands and indie promoters booking the room.
These are the rooms where the community actually shows up. Know them, support them, and if you're booking a tour through the mid-Atlantic, get familiar with all three.
Go Follow Them
The underground scene doesn't run on algorithms or marketing budgets — it runs on people showing up, online and in person. Grinding With Strangers is the connective tissue holding a wide swath of the mid-Atlantic scene together, and it's worth being a part of that network whether you're in a band, booking shows, or just trying to find somewhere to be on a Saturday night.
